A shared responsibility – yours too!

Privacy is important; privacy is what allows us to determine who we are and who we want to be.

Even when we think we have nothing to hide, our data is tapped and used for other purposes without our knowledge.

This leads to security problems, passwords are stolen, accounts are hacked, viruses and Trojans infest the computer, encrypt or delete our data and maybe even infect the whole campus network so that others cannot work either. Information is used against us, e.g. to write false invoices or manipulate us.

It is tedious to keep track of and use all the technical security measures such as email and hard disk encryption, password management programs, browser settings and secure file sharing programs. They are like the brakes when driving a car. They make it more difficult for us to work. But in the end, these security measures actually allow us to drive faster, because thanks to the brake, it doesn't throw us off the curve. Fixing a broken system – and a broken reputation – and recovering lost data is much more time-consuming than using a secure system.

So that we don't have to deal with it ourselves, our IT deals with these issues and offers us secure platforms for working safely.
