The Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics is studying information processing in the brain. The Institute uses experi-mental, theoretical and computational methods to study perception, memory, decision-making, motor output and more, and develop recording and imaging methods accordingly. Job description
The Institute is building a new organizational structure involving a set of essential common facilities. As Head of the IT Core Fa-cility, you will create a modern, powerful, flexible and user-centred scientific and adminis-trative data and computing resource for use by the whole Institute. You will have the oppor-tunity to recruit for, and fashion, a team to carry out these functions, and create a strategy including both in-house and third-party provision.

Your Facility will be responsible in three main areas: (i) high performance computing (HPC) and (substantial) multi-level data storage; (ii) user support (across scientific and administrative departments) for Win-dows, Macintosh and Linux; (iii) support to help investigators with their scientific pro-gramming needs, including algorithm development, data and image analysis, machine learn-ing and beyond, and assisting them to use HPC.


  • Build, lead, and develop strategies for HPC/data storage, user support and scientific programming, in-cluding budget, personnel planning and beyond
  • Coordinate the hiring and management of the rest of the IT core facility team, in addition to incorporating and deploying existing expertise
  • Work closely with scientists and administrators to implement modern, service oriented IT solutions
  • Interact with the leadership of the institute to help plan the future of IT at the Institute
  • Interact with IT groups in other Institutes on the Max Planck cam-pus at Tuebingen and beyond to develop and implement common and share solu-tions
  • Organize courses and training for further education of scientists, students and employees


  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and at least a working knowledge of German
  • Experience in scientific HPC environments, including cluster management, enterprise storage (cloud, NAS, etc.)
  • Experience with storage systems
  • Experience running user support services
  • Practical experience successfully leading IT teams
