The Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics investigates information processing in the brain. The institute uses experimental, theoretical and computer-aided methods to study perception, memory, decision-making, motor performance and more, and to develop appropriate recording and imaging techniques. The Institute is multidisciplinary, has excellent facilities and close links to the neighbouring Max Planck Institutes and the University of Tübingen.

As soon as possible, we are looking for a

Head of Communications Core

The communication core will be responsible for external and internal communications associated with the Institute. External communication includes proactive and reactive interaction with the press, maintaining and improving the Institute’s external facing website, the organization and handling of public-facing events featuring the members and work of the Institute, including recruitment symposia and events and elements of the Institute’s internship and visitor programmes, writing, compiling, assembling and editing documents associated with the Institute’s board of trustees and external Scientific Advisory Board, and interfacing with our partner Max Planck Institutes in Tübingen and at the University, and with the public relations department at Max Planck Headquarters. In-ternal communication includes publicising seminars, helping departments and groups with their communication needs, writing and editing standard operating procedures for interfaces between staff and core services, facilitating internal wikis, and building and running a programme for welcoming and inducting new members of staff. Some of these programmes will take place in concert with the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology.

Your tasks

  • further building and management of a team of three staff responsible for all these functions
  • further development of the external and internal communication strategies in close coordination with the senior management of the Institute
  • responsibility for internal and external communication with all target groups and on all communication channels used by the Institute
  • coordination and responses to press inquiries
  • maintenance, expansion and further development of contacts with media representatives
  • creation and curation of content for the internal and external website of the Institute
  • targeted exchanges with scientists and collaboration with external institutions
  • planning and implementation of visitor programmes and events for internal and external stakeholders
  • organization of student internships
  • organizing and running a new welcome programme for incoming staff

Your qualifications

  • Master degree, ideally with a focus on PR, media or communication sciences
  • several years of management experience in a communications department, editorial office or agency
  • competence in events organization and manage-ment
  • structured, proactive, service- and result-oriented working practices
  • fluency in spoken and written German and English
  • experience with content management systems (Fiona, SharePoint, Typo3 or similar) and search engine optimization (SEO)
  • willingness to deal with different groups of people and to be flexible in terms of time and travel activities
  • professional experience in scientific and academic settings is desirable
