Core Facilities

Our Core Facilities, headed by Holger Fischer, are central service facilities for all employees at the institute. The access to the various services is organized differently. Therefore, check the following for each core.

IT Core

The IT Core Facility, headed by Holger Dinkel, provides a wide spectrum of tools, expertise, advice and services. They can assist with purchasing hardware and software, provide access to network shares, deal with printer problems, new equipment, provide VPN installations and other services via a JIRA helpdesk system. They also offer guidance on data management and sharing, as well as data backup and archiving. The IT Core Facility also maintains, and provides access to the HPC clusters and support for special experimental setups.

For any requests concerning our IT services, please consult: https://kybinfo.kyb.local/

Employees can request support via the JIRA helpdesk : https://kybinfo.kyb.local/jira/servicedesk

Communications Core

The Communications Core, headed by Daniel Fleiter, manages the institution’s communications and public image by handling media relations, including writing press releases, responding to journalist inquiries, and pitching stories about faculty, staff, and institute initiatives; overseeing brand management and marketing communications to ensure consistent messaging across social media, advertising, and digital platforms; coordinating crisis communications during emergencies or controversies; managing internal communications to keep faculty, staff, and alumni informed; promoting public engagement by organizing media coverage for events and producing content such as newsletters, videos, podcasts, blogs, and social media posts; and monitoring media coverage and engagement to evaluate and refine communication strategies.

The Communications Core also includes the International Office, bridging administration and internal communications. The International Office serves as the first point of contact for international researchers, students, and collaborators. Its main role is to support integration and facilitate mobility, ensuring that newcomers can focus on research and study without administrative obstacles. Key responsibilities include:

  • Onboarding and Orientation: Providing guidance on visas, residence permits, housing, health insurance, and local regulations. Organizing orientation sessions to help newcomers settle in.
  • Administrative Support: Assisting with enrollment, contracts, grant procedures, and other bureaucratic processes.
  • Cultural and Language Support: Offering language courses, intercultural training, and social programs to help international members integrate smoothly.
  • Networking and Community Building: Connecting newcomers with local researchers, peer groups, and mentors to foster collaboration and inclusion.
  • Institutional Liaison: Coordinating with academic departments, HR, and local authorities to streamline procedures for international staff and visitors.

Overall, the office ensures a smooth transition for international researchers, promotes diversity and inclusion, and strengthens the institution’s global engagement.

Precision-Mechanical and Electronic Workshop

The scientific workshops for precision engineering, headed by Markus Scheu, and electronics, headed by Oliver Holder, offer customized devices and services for experimental setups. Regulations and how you can order workshop parts are summarized on our Confluence Intranet: https://kybinfo.kyb.local/confluence/spaces/WOR/overview

Imaging and Scientific Support Core

The core team of the Imaging and Scientific Core, made up of physicists, electronic and biomedical engineers, as well as skilled technicians, has many years of experience at the institute. They have strong expertise in scientific software, programming, mechanics, electronics, and mechatronics, as well as in MRI and electrophysiology, animal research, radio interference suppression, and the development of sensitive amplifiers and sensors.

Well connected with administration, workshops, and other campus services, they are invaluable when starting research projects, helping to set up labs and develop experimental setups. They also handle specialized tasks such as export control, NMR and MRI support, fire safety, data protection, inventory management, and electrical safety checks.

Detailed information and contacts can be found on our Confluence Intranet: https://kybinfo.kyb.local/confluence/spaces/GEN/pages/69929402/Imaging+and+Scientific+Support

Animal Core

The Animal Core services are related to animal research, including regulatory applications, ethical assessments, and compliance with strict German animal welfare laws. This unit also ensures proper care and housing of animals.

If your research requires the use of laboratory animals, please contact your supervisor and the Animal Core immediately for advice and assistance. Approval for animal experiments must be carefully prepared and the process can take a long time, so start planning as early as possible.
