The institute grows

Two new buildings are being constructed for basic research purposes until 2029

At the Max Planck Campus in Tübingen, two new buildings are being constructed for research purposes. The expansion of the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics will comprise two new premises and be divided into several phases. Work on an additional institute building and a high-hygiene laboratory is scheduled to begin at the end of 2025, with completion planned for the latter part of 2029.

The two extension structures create the conditions necessary to remain not only competitive but also pioneering in international basic research.

The construction work will fit in with the concept of the surrounding area, which includes research institutions and start-up companies, thus connecting the research campus of the Max Planck Society with the nearby technology park. Visual references to the Swabian Alb are also to be created.

The rectangular structure of the high-hygiene lab will connect to the existing institute buildings and form a cohesive structure between a new institute edifice and the Max Planck Institute's magnetic resonance center.

Between and around the buildings, new connecting paths, green spaces, and retreats will be created, which, in combination with the facade design, will blend into the landscape of the Max Planck campus, the technology park, and the recreational and relaxation areas in the countryside.
