The Brain States for Plasticity group (PI Svenja Brodt) is looking for Master students and/or medical students (m/f/d) to join our team at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen, Germany.

Our lab aims to understand how information is encoded and stored in the human brain on a network level. Which brain networks contribute to information storage across the entire lifecycle of a memory and how is information distributed within these networks? How do different brain states like sleep, wake and transitional states shape the architecture of memory? What is the potential of different neuromodulatory, physiological and cognitive factors for influencing memory formation and neuroplasticity? To answer these questions, we combine behavioral paradigms with multimodal neuroimaging methods (fMRI, dwMRI, sMRI, EEG) and multivariate analysis techniques. You can find out more about our work at

We currently offer theses in three different projects:

  • Project 1: Investigates reactivation-induced rapid memory consolidation in wakefulness and sleep using fMRI, dwMRI, and polysomnography/EEG.
  • Project 2: Examines the contribution of sensory areas (early visual cortex) in episodic memory (engram) formation using a combination of univariate and multivariate analysis techniques (dwMRI, fMRI).
  • Project 3: Examines the effect of circadian fluctuation in hormone levels, body temperature, body posture, and stress on MR biomarkers for neuroplasticity.

Who we are looking for:

  • Preferably students studying psychology, medicine, cognitive science, neuroscience, biomedical engineering, or a related field.
  • Proficient in German and English.
  • Experience with MATLAB and/or Python recommended.
  • Interested in state-of-the-art cognitive neuroscience research and motivated to work in a fun and engaging team!
