Nitric oxide (NO) is a major messenger molecule in the brain. It is a potent vasodilator playing an important role in establishing neurovascular coupling linking neuronal activity to vasodilation. We plan to use a fluorescent NO sensor(DAF-FM DA) to directly detect intracellular NO production in vivo and in real-time. In the future, we intend to combine optogenetics and fMRI to identify the contribution of nitric oxide to the neurovascular coupling.
