Valentin Braitenberg war von 1968 bis zu seiner Emeritierung im Jahr 1994 Direktor am Max-Planck-Institut für biologische Kybernetik in Tübingen. Seine Forschung basierte vor allem auf der Verbindung von Neuroanatomie mit Gehirntheorie, mit dem Ziel, die Mechanismen von Hirnfunktionen aufzuklären. Hauptarbeitsgebiete waren das visuelle System von Fliegen, Kleinhirn und Bewegungsphysiologie, sowie Struktur und Funktion der Großhirnrinde. Hierbei ging es u.a um quantitativ-anatomische Untersuchungen am Cortex der Maus, an der weißen Substanz des menschlichen Gehirns, um Untersuchungen zur Orientierungsspezifität im visuellen Cortex von Primaten und psychophysische Studien dazu am Menschen, sowie einer neurologischen Theorie der Sprache.
