Information for PhD Students

In close cooperation with German Universities, especially the University of Tübingen, students from all over the world are working on their doctorates at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics. Here, they profit from a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment and from first-rate scientific resources.

Due to the localization of a number of excellent research institutions as well as educational and advanced training centers at the research site Tübingen, the PhD students get access not only to the colloquia on Max Planck Campus Tübingen, but also to additional training possibilites throughout the whole field of neurobiological, cognitive and medical research.

After clarification of the financial aspects with the institute, especially talented PhD students can apply for the doctoral courses at the Graduate Training Centre of Neuroscience of the University Tübingen to attend a unique curriculum.

Interested junior scientists with Diploma or Master degree can apply directly to open positions or speculatively. Please state your interests and research project, add a CV, credentials/grades as well as contacts for two referees and send them to the dedicated department or research group of the Institute.

International Max-Planck Research Schools

Educating and training junior scientists is of primary importance for the future of research and development. The Max Planck Society, together with Universities launched an initiative called the “International Max Planck Research School”, IMPRS, to promote junior scientists. These Research Schools offer gifted students from Germany and abroad the possibility to prepare themselves for their doctoral exam by offering them, in addition to excellent research conditions, a structured course program. The Research Schools are geared to scientists who have already completed their masters degree and working towards their doctoral degree. They provide a first-class interdisciplinary education, interlink topics PhD candidates are working on and foster cooperation among the doctoral students and their advisor. The curriculum provides an excellent graduate education and focuses particularly on the needs and the specific interests of students. The thesis supervisor together with an advisory board monitor the student’s individual progress. The Schools would also like to familiarize students with research facilities in Germany and spark their interest for future cooperative activities with German scientists.

Graduate School of Neural & Behavioural Sciences / International Max Planck Research School

The Graduate School of Neural & Behavioural Sciences, initiated jointly by the University of Tübingen and the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, brings together areas, which are traditionally covered by biomedical research and by computer sciences.

As findings in modern neuroscience are expected to have significant impact beyond the framework of basic science particularly for medical fields, the Tübingen program addresses students who have completed a first degree in natural sciences, psychology or medicine. Major research activities of the neuroscience community in Tübingen include topcis of (human) cognition and behavior, as well as molecular mechanisms of developmental neuroscience, neurodegeneration and neuroregeneration. In addition, sensorimotor prostheses, retinal and cochlea implants are being developed.

PhD-Student Network of the Max Planck Society

Since 2003 all PhD students are organized within the PhD student network Max Planck PhDnet. It represents the interest of the PhD students within the Max Planck Society and aims to improve the training, provides information and organizes soft-skill courses and international scientific events.
